Transform Your Budget into a Spending Plan

Bertha was sitting at the desk pondering my new budget. I had decided it was high time I got my financial affairs in order, so I made a strict budget and I was going to stick to it!

"Bertha, what do you think about my budget?" I asked.

Bertha looked up to answer and I noticed she was wearing her rose colored reading glasses-perfect for reading budgets--according to Bertha. The glasses did match her adorable flamingo pink sundress with yellow flowers and lime green leaves and of course her pink high-heeled sandals. As usual Bertha was quite a sight.

"Well," Bertha started, "It seems that you've been very detailed. I mean here is $20.96 for gas each week and $103.13 for groceries. You've really worked hard to figure things out to the penny."

"Yes, I did. But why do you look so puzzled? Is there something in my budget that don't you understand?"

"Oh, I understand your budget all right. It's just that it doesn't leave any room for shoes! What kind of a budget doesn't have room for shoes?"

"Well, actually I didn't consider shoes when I was making my budget. Do you really think it's important to include shoes?" I could tell Bertha was about to get on her soapbox by the way she looked at me so I sat down for her answer.

"Shoes would the first item on any budget I made. That's because they are very important to me. For you it might be something else entirely. And looking at your feet I'm sure it would be," Bertha laughed. "Anyway the point is that the only way I can stick to any kind of a budget, whether it's for time or money or even a diet, is to include room for things I love. That way I can be responsible without feeling deprived. In fact I wouldn't even call this a 'budget'. Budget sounds so serious. Like I'm giving up everything I love. I'd call it a 'Spending Plan!' Now what did you leave off your spending plan that would make your heart sing?"

I didn't have to think long before I answered, "Flowers, fresh flowers, I love fresh flowers. I'm going to add flowers to my spending plan." I got out my pen and calculator and made the necessary adjustments then handed the spending plan back to Bertha. She pulled her rose colored glasses back down on her nose and smiled, "Now that's a plan you can live with!"
